They originated in Slack and have since been adopted by Discord, GitHub, Basecamp, and many other platforms. When you type a shortcode in a supported app, it automatically converts to the corresponding emoji.
Shortcodes are not standardized across platforms — different services may use different codes for the same emoji. The codes shown in this cheat sheet follow the most common conventions used by Slack and GitHub. If a shortcode does not work on your platform, try variations (e.g., :thumbsup: vs :+1:) or use the emoji picker instead.
Pro tip: In most apps that support shortcodes, you can start typing a colon followed by a keyword to see autocomplete suggestions. For example, typing :hea will show all heart-related emoji.
